After 28 years working in finance roles, from accounts clerk to finance manager, I took the decision to set up my own business. I've always liked organising, solving problems, and working with people and numbers, so opening my own Bookkeeping and Payroll company seemed the natural thing to do.
I registered with ICB to train to become a Certified Bookkeeper in March 2019 and had passed both necessary qualifications at Distinction with Honours by July 2019 (averaging 98% across 8 exams), I also passed my Payroll Diploma with 99% and was then granted my Practice Licence. I've enjoyed it so much that I'm going to continue my studies and hope to offer a further range of services including Self Assessment Tax Returns and submission of accounts for small companies very soon.
I spent a lot of my career working in small businesses ranging from manufacturing to hospitality to IT services so although I specialise in finance I have experience in many other areas and hope that this will help me have a good understanding of how your business works and what you want from it. I appreciate the time pressures involved in having to do everything yourself and know that many small business owners spend their weekends and evenings 'doing the books' but by instructing a bookkeeper you could regain your free time safe in the knowledge that your books will arrive complete and up to date, as and when needed.
One factor in me setting up my business came from sitting thinking about a part -time accounts role that I was going to apply for a few years ago.... finance duties are dictated by the calendar, you're busy for a few days at month end, busy on payroll day, busy every third month with VAT returns, and busy twice a month doing HMRC submissions but the rest of the time is a different matter, once processes have been put in place the rest of the work can be scheduled to suit. I worked out that although the job was 20 hours a week, I think it could've been done in half the time and that's a lot of extra time to unnecessarily pay someone for. If the job had been flexi time, to work as and when the workload dictated, it would've saved the company a lot of money that is why I now offer to do just that. I can go into companies just for the time that's needed to get the job done, not set hours each day, I can go in for an hour here and there to keep things up to date or for couple of hours once a week, after a consultation I'll have a good indication of the workload and the peaks and troughs, I only want people to pay for the time and services that they need.
Sole trader, partnership, not for profit organisation or limited company, businesses come in all sizes and each is unique, no job is too small, it might take me 1 hour a month or 20 hours a month, it might be paperwork kept in a shoe box or fully computerised records, I don't mind, the first step is to call 07855 037317 to arrange a free consultation so I can issue a free, no obligation quote and show you that it might not cost as much as you think.
